Kinds of angel tattoos and what they symbolize
Theologians, mystics and poets have argued for centuries what angels look like and even whether they can be seen at all. Clearly, artists want angels to be visible that they can almost be seen anymore. Angels have long been depicted in medieval paintings, mosaics, stained glass, tapestries, sculptures and portraits of them in action can be found in the walls and ceilings of cathedrals. With angels as being an eternally appealing subject, it would not escape the eye of tattoo lovers to have them inked as a body art.
Angels are look up as messengers of God, a figure of guidance and protection who provide humans with spiritual as well as emotional needs. Moreover, it imbibes holiness, peacefulness and serenity. An angel represents spirituality, devotion and faith to God so the permanence of tattoo denotes the binding of faith.
Angel tattoos are preferred by both men and women but how they are projected often varies. For most men, angel tattoos generally express their masculinity, their courage and bravery, some even their loved for women. These are the kind of angel tattoos with female angels sexily and scantily clad as if they were pin up girls. For most women, angels are an expression of purity within the soul or declaration of innocence and playfulness at the same time.
Kinds of angel tattoos
There are a myriad of angel tattoos and how they are projected vary depending on the message that a tattoo enthusiast wants to convey. Here are some of the common kinds of angel tattoos.
Guardian angels – these angels were traditionally believed to interact with people in the course of daily life. They linger in visible form taking responsibility for the well being of people in trouble, leading them out of danger and providing sustenance. For these reasons, guardian angel tattoos are picked by people who have spiritual and religious beliefs.
Archangels – these angels were envisioned in portraits dressed in simple robes of one or two colors with their wings providing the only elements of decoration. There are three well-known archangels, Gabriel, Michael and Rafael and they played major roles in stories from the bible. Michael is the warrior and guardian of the righteous and instrument of justice who holds a scale or sword. Gabriel is the angel who is the bearer of tidings both good and bad, he was the angel who brought news to Mary about the impending birth of Christ. Raphael is linked with healing and protector of children and travelers. Archangel tattoos are usually preferred by men with elaborated wings on their arms, chest and back.
Cherubs – are cute, little adorable angels who look like small children. In early paintings, they were portrayed as sometimes with bodies, sometimes just merely winged heads. Cherub tattoos are commonly used in loving memory of someone who passed away, usually tattooed on the shoulder. Women also like cherub tattoos because of their cuteness and playful innocence at the same time.
Battles of good and evil – scenes of the war in heaven between the rebel angels led by Satan and the good angels led by archangel Michael were often depicted in arts especially painting. In the world of tattoo art, this metaphoric battle between good and evil is also favored, usually by men. With the complexity of the design, these angel and devil tattoos can be found on the leg, arm and back. People who choose these designs probably want to be reminded and at the same time, convey the message the good always triumph over evil.
Fallen angels – these are angels who were banished from heaven for not obeying God. Most famous of this kind is Satan who rebelled at being instructed to bow down to Christ and in resistance, he gathered and form his own group of angels. They lost the battle and were sent to hell to suffer. Fallen angel tattoos are drawn in the form of Satan or devil with evil looks and are usually preferred by those who are into dark arts like the Goths.
Angel Wings – angel rely on their wings to carry them from one world to another being an intermediary between heaven and earth. Surprisingly, angels were originally shown as wingless until the 4th century. However, when artists started to personify them with wings, these eventually became their most interesting feature. In tattoos, angel wings are another favorite. While there are some who goes for it as miniature tattoos on their back or shoulder, there are a lot who goes for angel wing tattoos as a full design as if it were real wings and ready to flap anytime. This can be a representation of one’s aim to be an angel to guard or protect somebody, or it can be a fulfillment of one’s desire or fantasy to fly and be free.

Kanji is a complex and difficult form of writing system used in Japan. It was adapted from Chinese characters more than 1,500 years ago when the Japanese had no writing system. Since Japanese is very different from Chinese, additional sets of symbols called kana were developed, each standing for a syllable rather than a separate consonant or vowel. These two kana are called hiragana and katakana which are phonetic symbols and represent pronunciation. Hiragana is used for expressing Japanese words while katakana is used for foreign words and names.

This placement is excellent for starting out with small designs especially on the top part of the foot. Most loved designs are flowers, tribal art, stars and lettering. It is advise though not to go with very miniature designs since with the given possibility of foot tattoos getting blurred after some time, the tattoo might end up looking like a blob
If you choose to have it inked on your foot, you always have the option of hiding it when needed and you can easily show it off just by wearing sandals or flip flops. Therefore, it can be discrete yet can be flaunted when you feel like it.
The “success” of your foot tattoo depends entirely on how you take care of it. If you really want it bad ( which is understandable) you should be 100% committed to making it work by taking extra care of it.
How to take care of your foot tattoo
Here are some tips shared by our tattoo artist friends:
- The initial healing process will determine the final outlook of your tattoo so give extra care and attention during this period.
- Don’t wear shoes, socks or stockings for at least 3 weeks. If you can get away with not wearing this at all for even longer period, then by all means go for it.
- Keep it slightly moist with an ointment that your tattoo artist recommend to you. Apply with just the right amount to keep it moisturize and infection-free but not too much which might clog the pores.
- Keep your foot clean and avoid exposing it to dirty areas especially during the healing process.
- Give them lots of air and try not to rub them too much.
- Avoid too much exposure to the sun, and no soaking and swimming for at least 3 weeks.

Butterfly tattoos are inked on the body in a myriad of ways. They can be executed on the skin with big bold details or they can simply be tattooed small and simple. Some choose to have them in realistic form while others choose tribal butterfly rendition. The best thing about this tat theme is that they are very versatile and flexible. When tattooed in miniature scale, they can usually be seen on the ankle, foot, lower stomach, lower back and arm. For those who prefer them larger, they can be seen tattooed on the shoulder, back, rib cage, chest and hip area.
As interesting as they are as tattoo designs, butterflies as insect creatures are equally as wonderful as well. They go through four stages in their lives which are egg, larva, pupa and adult. The female butterfly lays more than 100 eggs but only two out of a hundred will hatch. Some of the eggs are eaten while others are destroyed by heavy rains, drought or wind. When they hatch, they become larva or caterpillars. Its main job then is to gobble up solid foods like leaves, flowers, stems and even other insects. Next, it becomes pupa wherein it undergoes a big change called metamorphosis. The pupa changes color as the adults develop inside it. When its ready to emerge, it pumps body fluid through the soft veins of its crumpled wings until they are fully expanded. When the wings are stiff enough to fly, out comes the beautiful and stunning butterfly that is ready to spread out its wonder in the world.
Aside from its attractive physical features, a butterfly is symbolical as well which is another one of its major characteristics that makes it a favorite tattoo design. Because of its metamorphosis from a sluggish caterpillar to an exquisite butterfly, it is regarded as a symbol of rebirth and resurrection. As it rises from its chrysalis, it represents the soul leaving the body. For the Chinese and Japanese, it is a sign of both immortality and joy while for the Ancient Greeks, the butterfly represents the soul.
For the female tat enthusiasts, butterfly tattoo designs are fitting representation of the change and transformation they go through in their life. It is a symbol of transition as well as joy, beauty and freedom.
