Yin yang tattoo designs are pretty popular nowadays, mainly due to its simple yet very meaningful design. It’s actually one of the most recognized symbols of today although it originates from Chinese culture. A simple circle with black and white colors intermingling together, the yin yang tattoo designs are best interpreted as balance. However, there’s definitely more to the yin and yang symbol that that.

Meanings of Yin Yang Tattoo Designs

Aside from the connotation of balance, there’s definitely more to the yin and yang. The color actually represents the opposing sides of the world: black and white; good and bad. In some cases, people see it as the attraction between opposites. Designed to fit like two puzzle pieces, the resulting image doesn’t have a specific beginning or ending. Hence, it can also be said that the yin yang tattoo designs represent the cycle of life.

CLICK BELOW FOR THE BEST SOURCE OF YIN YANG TATTOOS

However, the black and white halves are not completely separated from each other. In the black portion, there is a small white dot and vice versa. This shows that even the darkness has a small spot of light and light always has a small spot of darkness. It’s a very provoking thought that may be likened to human nature – not all bad people are bad and not all good people are good.

In the Chinese culture, the Yin and Yang are seen as a symbol of harmony. If two opposing sides meet each other, they will create a balance leading to peace and serenity.

The Yin and the Yang
The Yin is the white portion of the symbol and is usually seen as the female part. Funny enough, it’s also interpreted as the destructive side of the equation while the masculine Yang is the creative counterpart. The belief goes that when the two balance each other, they will then create the five elements namely: earth, fire, water, wood and metal.

Best Places for the Yin Yang Tattoo Designs

Thanks to how simple the basic image is, there’s really no problem with placing it on whatever body part. Some women prefer to place it on the lower back, the biceps, the shoulder blades, hands or hipbone. Males prefer the arms, biceps, back and the chest. In fact, yin yang tattoo designs on the chest are regarded as bravery.

How Yin and Yang is Drawn
Here comes the tricky part when it comes to yin yang tattoo designs – the proper placement. Since the circle doesn’t have an upside or downside, there’s really no way of knowing which color goes up or down. Females usually prefer the lighter side up due to obvious reasons why the males tend to favor the black part. Of course, there are those who decide to place it in a way where the division in colors will form a 90 degree angle.

Others also take the small dots into consideration when deciding the best position for their yin yang tattoo designs. A common approach is that the small white circle is the sun and should therefore be at the top. Of course, some people don’t really care and just have it tattooed any which way. Considering how much message they symbol by itself connotes, the placement is not really much of a problem.

Of course, some people prefer to get more creative with their yin yang tattoo. Some people prefer using other symbols to represent the black and white halves. For example, two fishes swimming tail to tail of each other or perhaps the sun and the moon can also be easily depicted and recognized as the representation of the yin and yang. This type of approach lets the individual be more creative with their yin yang tattoo designs.

Lots of people may be surprised at seeing elephant tattoo designs on a friend, especially if they have no idea about the ulterior meaning of the symbol. The fact is that although animal tattoos seem to be popular, we tend to go for the cute (birds) or the ferocious (tiger) sort and elephants are neither. However, what most people don’t know is that there are deeper meanings behind these animals which make them highly viable as tattoo designs.

Elephant Background
The behavior of elephants is one of the top reasons why they are attributed with so many good and meaningful translations. Elephants usually band in a group with the females joining together to raise the children. In fact, a single elephant is capable of keeping track of as many as 30 other elephants at any given time. These animals are fiercely protective of their young and incredibly respectful with their dead. It is well documented that elephants bury their dead comrades and have a unique way of showing respect should they encounter a corpse during wandering. They would usually stand together and pass the bones of a dead elephant around the group before putting it back exactly how they found it. This is perhaps why the elephant is regarded as they are the guides of souls and spirits in the underworld according to Hmong legends.

Meaning of Elephant Tattoo Designs

In Indian culture, elephants are widely respected and believed to be a symbol of chastity. They are also viewed as representations of wisdom and patience. In fact, there is an Indian god called Ganesh often seen as having the head of the elephant. For some people, the elephant means success and prosperity. For this reason, it is not unusual to find elephant statues in a house with the hope of attracting success within its walls.

They were also used for battle during the old days with royalty using the elephant as their primary means of transport. Due to their huge size, they automatically scare enemies and therefore equated with power. In fact, the elephant is sometimes used as a representation of the king, the ruler or the leader. It is believed that seeing an elephant is “good luck” especially if it happens to be a white one. The white elephant or the Albino elephant is the most revered of all.

How to Be Creative with Elephant Tattoo Designs

There are numerous styles placed on elephant tattoo designs, usually depending on likes of the person being inked. As mentioned, the white elephant is the most revered – but who wants a plain white image for their body art? This is why sometimes people defer from the normal grayish elephant image and choose to use brighter colors for their ink. In some cases, elephant tattoo designs are adorned with different colors in strategic places as if they were carrying royalty. This way, people will be able to make their tattoo eye catching while still staying true to the elephant’s meaning.

Best Place for Elephant Tattoo Designs

Most people who opt for elephant tattoo designs already have previous inks on their body. This is because attempting an elephant tattoo is highly ambitious as the design is usually larger than the normal tattoo. In fact, it is usually placed at the back or a large expanse of the arms. This is in deference to the actual size of the elephant. Of course, some people manage to make elephant tattoo designs look small and appealing at the same time – usually by copying the “Dumbo” elephant cartoon. A small elephant head is also a popular option for those who want something that could fit on their feet or near the wrist. Luckily, these types of elephant tattoo designs don’t alter the symbol’s meaning for the wearer.

Christian tattoo designs are a popular choice for both male and females. It’s a symbol of belief and devotion to a higher power, which is why most people are OK with seeing a Christian tattoo in public. However, there are so many Christian tattoo designs today that it usually takes a long time for someone to choose the best design for them. That being said, following are some of the most popular religious tattoo designs today.

The Cross

The cross design is possibly the most widely recognized symbols today. Like most religious tattoos, it can look upon as a representation of God or a higher power. Some cross tattoos however are seen as a remembrance of someone who has passed away. One popular variation of the cross is the Celtic where a knot is placed at the center of the symbol. Apart from the religious implications, the knot also symbolizes the Cycle of Life or even eternity.

Religious Personalities
The Virgin Mary, Baby Jesus and Jesus Christ are only some of the personalities who find themselves as Christian tattoo designs. The image of Jesus Christ is easy enough to decode but sometimes, the Virgin Mary has a different connotation for the wearer. In fact, some people have the Virgin Mary tattoo as a symbol of devotion to their own mothers.

The Guiding Star
Another religious favorite is the guiding star the three kings used to locate the newborn baby Jesus. For most, this particular symbol not only relates to religion but also to a journey through life. The star is believed to act as a guide that would lead a person to their destiny or in true Christian context, to the lord.

Angels
Angels are one of the most favored Christian tattoo designs. They can be drawn as a child, a woman, a man and sometimes a simple pair of wings. Angels symbolize a great deal of things for different people. In most cases though, they are seen as guides that help people find the right path to salvation. The childlike angels or cherubim are often seen as playful and therefore represent happiness and joy. Others take the image of the angel and use it as a reminder of a lost loved one.

Sacred Heart
The Sacred Heart is often depicted with the heart shape being surrounded by thorns. It is translated as a Christ’s heart and his devotion to humanity. The thorns are a symbol of the Lord’s pain and suffering for the rejection inflicted by people. The Sacred Heart may be depicted with or without the image of Jesus Christ.

Textual
Bible verses or even just the specific location of a favorite verse are also excellent tattoo choices. This type of tattoo is often inked due to a person’s personal devotion and not always meant to be shown.

Where to Put Christian Tattoo Designs

The location of Christian tattoo designs often depends on how large the item is. Images of the Jesus Christ or the Virgin Mary usually deserve a larger than normal canvas like the back or the arms. The cross, sacred heart, stars and even angels however are perfectly fine in smaller body parts like the lower back, the hipbone, the collar bone or even near the wrists.

Choosing Christian Tattoo Designs

Since there are so many, choosing Christian tattoo designs may be hard, especially for those who are getting one for the first time. It is advised that people not only look into the religious implications of the design but also deeper meanings behind it. For example, an angel tattoo has religious roots but drawn the right way, it could also allude to an individual’s personal belief, emotions and ideas. To sum it up, individuals must think long and carefully before finally deciding on the best Christian tattoo designs for them.

Armband tattoo designs are quite possibly one of the most common ink choices today. The design basically covers the bicep like a ring and is a simple yet tasteful approach to body tattoos. In fact, the armband is a favorite choice for people who are getting a tattoo for the first time in their life.

One common misconception with armband tattoo designs is that there are very limited options for creativity. This is because most people see either barbed wired tattoos or thorn tattoos surrounding the arm. However, there’s definitely more choices for armband tattoo designs including the following:

Celtic Armband Tattoo Designs

Celtic designs are perfect as armband tattoos since they have these loops and curves that can be easily intertwined with each other to form a ring. They are usually drawn in black like most Celtic tattoo symbols. What’s great about this is that the loops themselves represent the Cycle of Life.

Snakes and Animal as Armband Tattoos

Some people like to put a bit more color on their armband tattoo designs. For example, a snake encircling the arm or perhaps small little butterflies chasing each other in a circle works as a great armband. A good tattoo artist is capable of converting various animal symbols into small sizes that could act as a ring around the arm. What’s great about this is that a person can choose an animal that has special meaning to them.

Textual
Whether it’s Chinese, Japanese or Latin, textual armbands are a great way of combining two classic tattoo approaches. Perhaps choose a favorite quotation and have it written in a circular pattern. This is a classic approach that lets the wearer be as unique as possible.

Flowers and Vines
As mentioned before, thorns are a favorite in armband tattoo designs, especially for the female population. It’s a much more feminine approach to the masculine barbed wire concept. Vines are also great an in some cases, women also choose to have roses growing on the vines. This incorporates the meaning of the flower in the tattoo, allowing women to convey whatever message they want. Other popular flower choices for armband tattoo designs include lilies and sometimes even sunflowers although they don’t fit well with the vine concept.

Getting Creative with Armband Tattoo Designs

Sometimes, people are not content with a simple straight line encircling their arm. For example, some people will have a blood armband tattoo and for the sake of realism will have some of those bloods trickling down to the elbows. The same goes for flower armbands, Celtic armbands or textual designs. Simply put, some individuals choose to treat the armband like a necklace with a “pendant” in the middle to capture attention.

Placement of Armband Tattoo Designs

As the name suggests, the armband tattoo is placed on the arm – but you need to keep in mind that the arm is not confined to the bicep area. It’s the whole stretch of skin from the shoulders to the wrists so people have the choice of putting their armband anywhere in between. There’s really no ulterior meaning where the tattoo is placed but if you prefer to hider you tattoo during office hours, the area directly below the shoulders is the best point. For those who are not afraid of displaying their armband, somewhere nearer the elbows is better. So basically, the location of the band in the arm depends on how much a person wants their tattoo viewed. It really depends on one’s personal preference on how he wants the tattoo portrayed.

Armband tattoo designs are popular due to their simplicity and how easy they are to have inked. However, it is important to note that these tattoos mostly originated as “symbols” of being part of a demographic. For example, the ocean-inspired designs are a point of pride for people in Hawaii while the barbed wire is a favorite for the Russian Mafia. The Yakuza on the other hand prefer solid black armband tattoo designs.

Day of the Dead tattoos has become popular beyond the country which they originally hailed from. In actuality, the Day of the Dead is the Mexican version of Halloween and has also been adopted by other cultures. This holiday celebrates the people who have passed on to the other dimension, usually with friends and family gathering to honor their loved ones.

The Day of the Dead Symbols

The symbol for Day of the Dead tattoos is usually a skull, adorned with various designs or just simply drawn in bright colors. Also known as Dia de Los Muertos, there are various symbols used to depict this holiday. Some of which include skulls, wine and various spirits, skeletons in celebration, a half flesh and half skull face, bandoleros and bread known as “pan de muerto”.

Each symbol is deeply rooted to the main concept: remembrance of the dead. The skeletons represent loved ones who have passed away while the colors, adornment and clothes placed on them are meant to depict that they are still alive in spirit. The face depicted as half skull and flesh also provides the same message and reminds the living of the Cycle of Life.

It should also be noted that Day of the Dead tattoos are almost always colorful. This is because the colors themselves have significant meaning. For example, pink means celebration while white depicts hope and purity. The color orange talks of a new day while red is seen as blood and sacrifice. Purple is usually translated as the color of mourning.

People who choose to have Day of the Dead tattoos usually stick to the original meaning of the holiday: remembering a loved one. Hence, it isn’t surprising to place names or additional symbols with the Dia de los Muertos tattoo to make it more personal for the owner. In some cases, the skull is not merely a remembrance but rather, seen as the individual’s true self. This is because in Mexican culture, the skull is not a representation of death but rather of the soul. It depicts what is within everyone and by adorning it, they are showing the acts of the person within the flesh.

Best Places for Day of the Dead Tattoo

Thanks to how easy it is to scale skulls, Day of Dead tattoos for women and men can be placed practically anywhere. Favorite locations include the arm, the lower back, the shoulder blades, in the region of the chest and the hipbone. Since the symbol has managed to gain appreciation beyond Mexican culture, it is not surprising to find other people recognizing and choosing the design. However, many choose to have their Day of the Dead tattoos small since the skull is often seen as displeasing in public.

And as they have become ubiquitous, a lot of tat enthusiasts and artists have developed different styles of tattoo art to make them unique and exceptional from the rest. And this year, we singled out 5 tattoo theme that have been getting a lot of attention in the tat community, making them the hottest and most popular to date.

Sleeve tattoo whether be it full sleeve or half sleeve, is an artist’s dream since it’s a chance for him to work on a beautiful body canvas that gets displayed all the time – the arm. A good tattoo art on this area of the body tells a story that are represented by various symbols and images and intertwined together by a common element for them to come out as one whole entity.

(tattoo by checkoutmyink.com)

The totality of it all is something that has a deeper connection and meaning to the person sporting it. It can be a set of flowers like cherry blossoms or hibiscus channeling the beauty of life or as a reminder to live life to the fullest. It can be dragons, snake, cougar, or panther to represent bravery, strength, courage or wisdom. Another popular rendition of sleeve tat has something to do with representing one’s culture like Celtic, Japanese or Chinese maybe or tribal such as Aztec, Maori or Samoan. Out of all this, Japanese-themed design seem to be really popular because of the depth and subtlety of the meaning they can represent. Skull, pin-up girls, and day of the dead theme are also popular as sleeve tattoo designs.

Rib tattoos are undeniably one of the hottest and sexiest tattoo designs these days. With tats being very mainstream in the present time, one has to think of ways to be unique and special on how they represent themselves through body art. And getting inked on the rib area can definitely be the route for that as not everyone can deal with the pain since this is a bony area with less tissues to cushion the skin during tattooing.

However, most tat enthusiasts who has gone through this will say that it’s definitely worth the pain since they can flaunt an amazing body art that can highlight the natural curves and shape of their body. And since this is a huge canvas to work on, there are lots of room for creativity and artistry, the only limit is your imagination. Be it cherry blossoms, koi fish, pin up girl, skulls or lotus flower, getting rib tattoos can separate you from the rest and make you look different on how you communicate a part of yourself through body ink.

Stars may appear small and simple yet they can be meaningful and expressive at the same time making them one of the most sought after tattoo designs for both male and female tat enthusiasts. They are very versatile yet easy to manage at the same time.

Star tattoos can be flexible in terms of what they symbolize and they can be put anywhere on the body without losing their artistic appeal. Stars can be seen tattooed solely on the neck, wrist and arm or can be inked in clusters on the rib cage, back of the neck, foot and hip area. And in terms of color, anything goes, making them even more enjoyable as tattoo designs. Shades of blue, red, yellow, lavender, pink, green , orange can all be used, in fact the more the brighter. Stars have long been favored as tattoo art and will continue to be for more years to come.

Flower tattoos have an immortal appeal to them. Aside from visually stunning, the language of flowers are meaningful and significant. Just like the stars, they are very flexible and versatile making them well-liked by a lot of tattoo lovers. That is why, it is safe to use that it’s not only the women who has embrace the flowers as tattoo designs but the men as well.

They can also be seen sporting these feminine designs as body art such as the rose, cherry blossoms and lotus. They can be tattooed alone or they can be combined with other symbols to create an even purposeful statement. For the men, it can represent a softer side of themselves and maybe even, a feminine side. For the women, it’s a symbol of empowerment and beauty. Aside from the three types mentioned earlier, other flowers that are considered popular these days are hibiscus, lilies, orchids, iris and magnolia.

Quote tattoos, text tattoos, lettering or script perhaps, however way you call it, they all have one common element- they have words instead of images as highlight of the designs. Perhaps this can be a more explicit way to express one’s message or this can be a great alternative to all the cliché designs out there.

It can range from being one strong word to meaningful short phrases and even multi-liner text. Contents can come from a favorite poem or lyrics of a song, an excerpt from the bible or book, lines from an unforgettable movie or popular quotations.

Font ranges from old English style, to script, and calligraphy, various styles of lettering can be used. Location is an important decision when it comes to this type of tat theme as it can make or break your tattoo. For long text or verses, it is advisable to have it inked on flat and large areas of the body such as the back, side, shoulder blade or arm. The shorter quotes or phrases would look more interesting on small areas such as the foot, wrist and ankle. With the many options and room for inventiveness, quote tattoo has indeed heighten its popularity and has carved itself a niche in the tat community.

Speck Osterhout draws inspirations for her tattoo designs from the people she meets and from the city itself where she lives – Chicago. Working at a tat shop called MasterMind Ink, she is surrounded by her co workers and anything she could possibly need (including music, a very loud music) to express her creativity and transform her artistry onto the skin. Check out our interview with her and some samples of her artistic works.

1)When did you start tattooing? How did you become a tattoo artist? I started tattooing the summer i graduated high school. I had a full ride to Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, but I decided to stay in my hometown of Torrington, Connecticut and tattoo instead. I figured i was already doing what i wanted to do for the rest of my life, so why waste four years? I had a friend who worked at the local tattoo shop, and he let me tattoo myself one night. He said it came out good, and I started tattooing customers the next day. I didn’t have an apprenticeship.

2)How would you describe your style of tattooing? Is there a particular genre that you specialize in?I enjoy doing neo traditional designs. I like to take a classic theme, and bring in some new elements. I pride myself on being able to do any kind of style. Of course I have my favorites, but it’s not really about what I want to do. Its what my clients want. Unless I’m doing it for free.

3)Based on your experience, what is the latest tattoo trend nowadays? Is there a particular design or tat theme that people are mostly going for these days?Well, I try to stay away from trends. If a client of mine wants a very trendy tattoo, i try to talk them out of it. you should never put something on your body just because everyone else is doing it. I think the coolest “ideas” right now have to do with placement. I like quirky, small tattoos in unusual areas. It’s badass.

4)When people ask you for advice on what designs to go for, what do you usually tell them.Something that will make you happy for the rest of your life. You never want to pick something that makes you feel uneasy. I think if it doesnt make you happy, its not worth it.

5)Which body part is be your favorite spot to ink on and why?I love forearms. The surface area of a forearm is really big when you think about it, and I think anyone who gets a large forearm tattoo is making a huge decision to be a heavily tattooed person. I think when someone gets tattooed there, it can change there life.

6)What are your three most favorite tattoo works? Can you tell us something about them. My favorite designs that I have done are hard to pick, but there are some that stand out. More recently, the Band of Horses inspired half sleeve I did on my friend Adam is my favorite right now. I drew an piece of artwork and he loved it so much we put it right on his arm, almost without any changes. I have since sold that piece of artwork so its nice to see something I created on my friend forever. My friend Jordan’s hand are also awesome. She has a dead bird tattooed on her palms. Its her only tattoo. And i cant really think of a third favorite, because everyone’s tattoo I’ve done is my favorite!!!

Travis Harper was offered a tattoo apprenticeship five years ago but he had to turn it down because he was in the middle of certifying as a sous chef with the American Culinary Federation that time. It was only last year, March 2009 that he decided to accept the apprenticeship to pursue tattooing and he has been honing his craft since then. Though it might only be just 22 months, he has already shown dedication and passion for the art, reflecting style and skill in the beautiful tattoo works that he has done. That is why, he is our featured tattoo artist for week, check out our short chat with him.

1) Where do you draw inspirations for your designs? When I draw I am usually sitting around the shop bored and in a neutral mood stuck between today and tomorrow. I draw with the most important part of the tattoo in mind….. the lines taught by my boss Rocky. This sort of comes to me by feel and flow from my graffiti style background as a late teen “writing” and drawing all day in class.

2)How would you describe your style of tattooing? When I started tattooing I had to re-teach myself how to draw to apply it to tattooing and have the tattoo style also. I really enjoy Tattooing bold, bright colors with a touch of randomness from graff backgrounds and cartoons etc.

I am inspired by my boss and best friend Rocky Arellano, Nick Baxter and Sean Herman if that explains it. I try to stay away from faces and some realism because I feel I am just not ready yet. I think the trend today with men is color portraits and traditional which will always be big.

Is there a particular design or tattoo theme that people are mostly going for these days? The trend with most women seems to be flowers. Most people that seek an artist aren’t looking for the trend but something original. Kyle Cotterman once told me at a seminar that I use alot is when a client comes to me, I celebrate their Ideas and put my touch into their Tattoo. There will always be Do’s and Don’ts.

4)Which body part is your favorite spot to tattoo on and why? My favorite parts of the body to tattoo arm arms and legs because there is a good amount of space to work with and the application tattoos really well. I have enjoyed tattooing all of my clients because I have learned something from every tattoo. I don’t have any specific favorites but the one that stands out to me the most is the Bald Eagle with the American flag in its feathers. I had a lot of fun with this one, it was done on a solider a week before he was deployed to Iraq and besides whats more symbolic than the Bald eagle. “Anything for our troops who risk their lives for us every day!”

Deanna Wardin has always been inclined to the arts so when her co worker agreed to apprentice her about two and a half years ago, she knew there was no turning back. And certainly, everything went well for this talented gal as she learned the craft and transformed her artistry onto the skin canvas. She continues to express her creativity and passion for the arts as she and her two best friends now own and operate a tattoo studio based in San Francisco, CA. Check out our interview with her and some previews of her amazing works.

1) Where do you draw inspirations for your designs? I draw inspiration from many sources ranging from other tattoo artists, vintage illustrations, printmakers, interesting typography, photographs, anything with an appealing aesthetic.

2)How would you describe your style of tattooing? Is there a particular genre that you specialize in? I have a pretty graphic style; I like aspects of realism and traditional tattooing as well. I like to use elements of multiple styles, but all in all I have a very graphic or illustrative style.

3)Based on your experience, what is the latest tattoo trend nowadays? Is there a particular design or tattoo theme that people are mostly going for these days? As far as trends go, I have recently done a lot of tree themed tattoos, but it seems people are becoming more and more creative, so there honestly is a nice variety of subject matter.

4)When people ask you for advice on what designs to go for, what do you usually tell them? I leave the initial ideas up to the clients; I enjoy brainstorming with people once they have given me a starting point. All in all, it’s up to the client what they want, it’s just my job to make sure what they want will work well as a tattoo and hold up over time.

5)Which body part is your favorite spot to tattoo on and why? I enjoy tattooing larger pieces the most, I think that arms, legs, and chest pieces are my favorite to tattoo because they are fairly large areas of the body to work with and I just enjoy the way tattoos look on those parts of the body.

6)What are your three most favorite tattoo works? My three favorite works… humm that’s a tough one. I really like the heart and paper airplane chest piece because of how that tattoo was conceived. The client said he wanted me to tattoo whatever I wanted, and I was at a loss so I had him write me a list of things he liked, objects, quotes, emotions, anything he could think of, and that tattoo was the result.

I also really like the day of the dead leg sleeve, It is on a good friend of mine, so it was fun to do and I am just really happy with the concept, color and shape of that piece. As a third favorite, it would be the blue girl purging the alphabet. That particular piece was a reproduction of an illustration done by another artist; I just think it is such a unique tattoo. Oh, I also love the retro city of old gadgets because it was fun to draw, is a perfect representation of the person it’s on, and just a cool idea. I cheated, that was four favorites not three, I just couldn’t decide.
