Proper Care of a New Tattoo

December 10, 2008 by , under Tattoo Care and Safety.

How to take care of a new tattoo? This has always been the most asked question after someone had a tattoo done.  The problem is there are a lot of misleading and false information online about how to properly take care of your tattoo.   A beautifully done tattoo can get ruined and turn into disaster if not handled the right way.  So we ask an experienced tattoo artist to give us first hand information on tattoo care.

Stefan Beckhusen, a tattoo artist from from Germany says about tattoo care…(check out Stefan’s works here)

A plastic wrap should hide the fresh tattoo from the moment of tattooing to the next morning, but max. 24 hours because some people become shin reactions by the wrap or by the sticky tape.

After removing the wrap please wash your tattoo all 3 hours with fluid medical soap, don’t rub by drying and dry only with papers from role like Bounty.

Then massage an absolute minimum of panthenol healing cream or special cream from your artist into the skin. The skin shouldn’t look fatty or wet after creaming. If it’s too much spot it up with papers. The skin should look nearly dry after cream massage. Don’t forget to do this while the whole healing time all 3 hours by day, and stand up for this once in the night. More about this while the whole healing time be carefully in any way.

No sun, no bathing or swimming, showers and washing only quick with body temperated water, don’t scratch if the skin is itching, and don’t tape the fresh tattoo again after removing the wrap.

Wear only easy clothes like longarmed t-shirt (for example) to protect the healing skin. The healing procedure usually never needs longer than 7 days. Be also carefully with the fresh healed tattoo for one more week because the absolute regeneration of the skin needs longer.

If you think your tattoo must be re-tattooed because there’s anything not really perfect (never the less why!) plase wait minimum 6 weeks for a better skin regeneration and don’t forget ….

Tattoos are no computer drawings and skin is a living medium. Your tattoo (-color) will work through the next 3 – 6 months in your skin. ”

Make sure that after getting tattoos done, proper care and attention should be given to them as aftercare is essential to your tattoo turning out well.
