January 11, 2011 by , under Tattoo Artists.

Deanna Wardin has always been inclined to the arts so when her co worker agreed to apprentice her about two and a half years ago, she knew there was no turning back. And certainly, everything went well for this talented gal as she learned the craft and transformed her artistry onto the skin canvas. She continues to express her creativity and passion for the arts as she and her two best friends now own and operate a tattoo studio based in San Francisco, CA. Check out our interview with her and some previews of her amazing works.

1) Where do you draw inspirations for your designs?
I draw inspiration from many sources ranging from other tattoo artists, vintage illustrations, printmakers, interesting typography, photographs, anything with an appealing aesthetic.

2)How would you describe your style of tattooing? Is there a particular genre that you specialize in? I have a pretty graphic style; I like aspects of realism and traditional tattooing as well. I like to use elements of multiple styles, but all in all I have a very graphic or illustrative style.

3)Based on your experience, what is the latest tattoo trend nowadays? Is there a particular design or tattoo theme that people are mostly going for these days?
As far as trends go, I have recently done a lot of tree themed tattoos, but it seems people are becoming more and more creative, so there honestly is a nice variety of subject matter.

4)When people ask you for advice on what designs to go for, what do you usually tell them? I leave the initial ideas up to the clients; I enjoy brainstorming with people once they have given me a starting point. All in all, it’s up to the client what they want, it’s just my job to make sure what they want will work well as a tattoo and hold up over time.

5)Which body part is your favorite spot to tattoo on and why? I enjoy tattooing larger pieces the most, I think that arms, legs, and chest pieces are my favorite to tattoo because they are fairly large areas of the body to work with and I just enjoy the way tattoos look on those parts of the body.

6)What are your three most favorite tattoo works? My three favorite works… humm that’s a tough one. I really like the heart and paper airplane chest piece because of how that tattoo was conceived. The client said he wanted me to tattoo whatever I wanted, and I was at a loss so I had him write me a list of things he liked, objects, quotes, emotions, anything he could think of, and that tattoo was the result.

I also really like the day of the dead leg sleeve, It is on a good friend of mine, so it was fun to do and I am just really happy with the concept, color and shape of that piece. As a third favorite, it would be the blue girl purging the alphabet. That particular piece was a reproduction of an illustration done by another artist; I just think it is such a unique tattoo. Oh, I also love the retro city of old gadgets because it was fun to draw, is a perfect representation of the person it’s on, and just a cool idea. I cheated, that was four favorites not three, I just couldn’t decide.
