Rib Tattoos

July 5, 2008 by , under Rib Tattoos.

Considering the pain that one has to go through to get it, rib tattoo is astounding and defnitely one of a kind. The rib cage is comparable to a big canvas for a body art where are ample room to work on for large pieces. With this tattoo being done on the part very close to the bone, pain would really be on the higher scale since there are lesser tissues to cushion the skin while needle is penetrating through it. If the chosen design is on the larger side, the completion usually takes more than one session since the pain can come to a point to being intolerable. Normally, tattoo images are rendered on ink from the hip all the way up to the area near the armpit while some wrap around the back.

Women love working rib tattoo art from the lower stomach all the way up to the side of the breast.  Tattoo art on ribs that are normally found on women are flowers complete with leaves and stems with very vibrant and lively colors.

Rib tattoos can really be sexy in a woman as it follow through the shape to emphasize the natural curves of the body. Flowers such as cherry blossom tree, lilies, orchids and floral vines are some of the most common designs that can be seen on the rib cage of females. Other non flower tattoos on ribs are lettering, fluttering butterflies, and stars.

A lot of tattoo enthusiasts seem to be aiming to have rib tattoos inked on them but horror stories about the pain of getting it done seem to be haunting a lot of them. In tattoo forums, you would see a lot of posts from people asking how painful it is or how badly it hurts. However, it seems that this anticipated painful experience does not hinder them as they go through it anyway. Those who went through rib tattoos do not deny that the pain can be excruciating but there is always an assurance in the end it was all worth it.

Here are some of the experience shared by people who had tattoos done on their ribs.

“Basically, the outline on the ribs was more than tolerable; it felt just like a tattoo anywhere else (for the record, i have two rib tattoos, two ankle tattoos, and a lower back tattoo). The shading itself was a lot worse - especially the green work. As it had to be done several times to get the shading right, it was horrible. I had to be frequently reminded to breathe, and it was a pain I never wanted to experience again. With the rest of the tattoo - it was fine. The little dots in the flowers kind of tickled, and the pink coloring felt more like how the outline did.” by Phoenixtx
“The tattoo was done in two sessions–each session was about two and a half hours. Certainly, it would have been too painful to endure the tattoo in one sitting.

Coming back to the pain issue again, I think it was well-worth it. After all, all tattoos hurt, it’s only the extent of the pain that varies. It is an unusual place for a tattoo, and if one chooses to get tattooed on the ribs, I think he/she will be rewarded with a work that is unlike anyone else’s.” by Zemmely

“It was my first tattoo, so I didn’t have too much to compare it to but really it wasn’t too bad. I won’t lie, there were some parts that were pretty painful, but it only hurts while the needles are actually going, then it’s nothing more than a sunburn after those couple of seconds! Totally worth going for it. And even when the needles were going, it’s nothing you can’t handle”. by Allison

This is what Daniel, a tattoo artist has to say about rib tattoos:”Honestly, they hurt quite a bit, but somehow they seem to be a bit more popular with women than with men. I think there are many reasons to choose this spot. For one it’s a big piece of real estate, and it’s highly possible to make a design that is form fitting and flattering. It’s also a spot that can be easily hidden for jobs…most designs are even covered by a tank top or camisole…or can easily be designed that way…
The most painful area down the side seems to be the front, close to the nipples, and the area where the ribs end. Down toward the hip and abdomen seem to hurt pretty bad as well.”
