Bald eagles are one of the most powerful and largest birds in the world that they are sometimes referred to as lions of the sky. They are big, brown and large-winged and flies at about 40 miles per hour. They have huge wings maybe 8 feet (2 meters) from tip to tip though they weigh only about 10 pounds. They belong to the group of birds called raptors because they eat other animals mostly the aquatic ones. They have long talons (claws) and spiky knobs on their toes which help them hold on to slippery prey.

Bald eagles are not actually bald, but rather their heads are covered with white feathers. They like to be near water where they can find fish to eat. They live near lakes, rivers and saltwater coasts or perch on high places like treetops, cliffs or rock piles. They actually have very exceptional vision of all animals that they can spot a rabbit over a mile away. After fish, birds are their next favorite prey such as ducks, geese and other birds that live near water.

The bald eagle has been the national symbol of the United States since 1872 because of its amazing strength, majestic looks and long life. A symbol of freedom and greatness, it can be seen on coins, dollar bills, tops of flagpoles and on the seal in front of the president when he speaks. As a tattoo design, its commonly tattooed on large areas of the body such as the back, chest, arm, shoulder and rib cage area. They are especially popular with men who serve in the military who wants to show their patriotism and pride in their country.
