Butterfly tattoos - what’s in a design

As captivating and as pretty as they are as tattoo design, butterflies are even more interesting if you look at its life stages. Butterfly starts as an egg which hatches in about 5-10 days. This grows into caterpillar and starts to eat as it gets bigger and bigger. So it will shed its skin 4- 6 times. After 2-4 weeks when it is full grown, it would transform into a pupa, at this stage, it is trapped in a cocoon where its body structure changed into those of an adult. Adter 10-15 days later, the cocoon opens and butterfly emerges, free-spirited as it is and ready to explore the world. This is what is famously known as metamorphosis. This is where the meaning of a butterfly tattoo as a symbolism of rebirth and transformation is based upon.
